Louisiana’s window tint laws are governed by Louisiana Revised Statutes (primarily R.S. 32:361.4 and related sections), with a major update effective August 1, 2025 (Act 143 / HB 119), allowing darker tints on front side windows.
These rules apply to most passenger vehicles (sedans, SUVs, vans, trucks). Always verify with local law enforcement or the Louisiana State Police for your specific vehicle, as enforcement can vary slightly by parish.
Key Visible Light Transmission (VLT) Requirements
VLT measures how much visible light passes through the window, the lower the percentage, the darker the tint.
Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only on the top portion (above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or typically the top 5-6 inches). No tint below this line.
Front Side Windows(driver and passenger): Must allow at least 25% VLT (changed from 40% pre-August 2025). This means you can now go as dark as 25% on the front doors.
Rear Side Windows(behind the driver): Must allow at least 25% VLT (any darker requires dual side mirrors if visibility is obstructed).
Rear Window(back windshield): Must allow at least 12% VLT (very dark tints are legal here).
Note on Multi-Purpose Vehicles (SUVs, Vans, Trucks, etc.): Rear side windows and rear windows often have more flexibility (sometimes any darkness allowed if dual mirrors are present), but front side windows follow the same 25% minimum as passenger cars.
Reflectivity Limits
All windows (front and rear): No more than 20%reflective (no mirrored or highly metallic appearances that cause excessive glare).
Other important Rules
Dual Side Mirrors: Required if rear window tint is darker than allowed or obstructs view.
Medical Exemptions: Drivers with certain medical conditions may qualify for darker tints with a physician’s certification and proper documentation (contact Louisiana OMV for details).
Prohibited Features: No red, amber, or yellow tints; no stickers or materials that alter color or reduce visibility excessively.
Commercial Vehicles / Law Enforcement: May have exemptions (e.g., certain state-owned vehicles).
Penalties for Non-Compliance: Fines typically start around $50–$150 for first offenses, plus possible removal of illegal tint. Repeat violations can increase penalties.
